Perspective Drawing

During the Graphical Communication in-service course held on the 14th- 16th September 2008, a new method of estimated perspective drawing, developed by Mr.Michael Mallia (EO Graphical Communication), was discussed and approved. The main advantages of this method are that it is simpler to use, it is more accurate, more versatile and it considerably reduces construction lines. Throughout the last two years, this method has been used successfully in several schools and the teachers’ and students’ response has been quite positive. The following is a summarized version of the Perspective PowerPoint Presentation.

  • hello Mr mallia. i am a little confused on how to deteermine the depth of the crate in single point perspective. from the pp i can see how you did it, but is that method suitable for any shape. that is for a longer room how could it be done? thanks and well done for the resources. very helpful.

    Thanks for your comments. Regarding the single point perspective for a room that has a rectangular floor plan for example 10 x 30 tiles (similar to a corridor);
    a) mark ten tiles touching the picture plane and draw lines from the tiles and converging to the vanishing point,
    b) draw the diagonal pointing to the extreme of the horizontal line (eye level) as per PowerPoint,
    c) draw horizontal lines at the points of intersections to get a 10 x10 tiled area,
    d) from the last tile touching the diagonal, draw another diagonal pointing to the horizontal line on the opposite side of the picture plane,
    e) draw horizontal lines as per stage (c) to get another 10 x 10 tiled area,
    f) repeat stage (d) and (e).
    You can keep on doing this proceedure until the tiles become so narrow that they become indistinguishible. As explained during the in-service course, results achieved by this method still produce an “estimated” perspective drawing.
