Surface development

During a recent Spring Fair held at St Margaret College Verdala, our department contributed by designing and producing cardboard hats to be worn during the activity.

These hats consist of an octagonal prism with an octagonal pyramid on top. The visor forms an integral part of the surface development. Windows were cut to provide the necessary ventilation. These proved to be very comfortable in practice. The design was inspired by the Victorian dome which forms a prominent part of the school architecture.

Most of the surface development consisted of a single piece, integrating the prism with the pyramid.

The above drawing outlined the concept of the design. This was later developed and modified to the students’ likings.

A template was cut and the students started with the production line.

The cardboard was cut and folded where necessary.

Scissors , utility knives and safety rulers were the main tools  used.

THE FINAL PRODUCT GLUED, STAPLED AND READY TO USE.

Graphical Communication teachers are invited to send photographs of their students’ projects to to be included in this section.
